Khamzat Chimaev can become a three-division UFC champion, claims Gilbert Burns

Khamzat Chimaev needs to make some small adjustments, and he’ll become a three-division UFC champion, claims Gilbert Burns.

‘Borz’ was widely considered one of the best fighters in the world at his peak in the sport. An unmatched aura that built each time he entered the cage. That feeling has started to fade for most fans after he suffered the first defeat of his career to Sean Strickland last time out. Unsure of his UFC future, Chimaev now finds himself potentially spending time away from fighting if his plans don’t unfold with the promotion.

However, Gilbert Burns believes Khamzat Chimaev is elite. As they approach their RAF wrestling match on Friday, September 18, Burns has heaped praise on Chimaev. ‘Durinho’ insists that, if Chimaev can knuckle down and find the right coaching setup that benefits him, he could go on an historic tear through the UFC roster and become the company’s first-ever three-weight champion.

“I think he’ll be back soon, you know. He’s still young, he’s still fresh. The only thing that I can [say from the] outside watching is I don’t like when he changes camps; changes coaches too much. When he fought me, he had that solid general. The guy he was with in Sweden… When the team was kind of small, I think he was doing better. So, that’s my personal opinion.

“But I still think he’s going to bounce back. He just needs a solid team. Guys [who are] not a yes-man. Guys that are going to tell him what he has to do, and I think he’s going to follow. But yeah, I think with a solid team, he can go back and become a champion; maybe two, maybe three-division champion.”

“I think he has what it takes. Just about [getting] his mind right with a good team, and I think he’s going to become a champion again.”
